2013-2014 Budget Talks Lead to Contentious City Council Meeting

The main focus of the June 6th meeting of the Murfreesboro City Council centered around discussion of the proposed 2013-2014 City Budget.  A public hearing on the matter drew only one speaker, surprising considering that individual components of the budget drew more speaker on their own just 2 weeks ago.  City Manager Rob Lyons rallied strongly behind a new performance-based pay raise of 3.5% for city employees, but councilwoman Scales-Harris was not quite convinced that enough research had been done into the particulars of the salary increases as well as the offering of promotions within certain departments.  The good news is that the new budget will see no increase in property taxes over last year, and did pass its first vote, but still requires several more in common weeks before becoming official.
