Runners from across Middle Tennessee are showing strong support for the 2nd Annual Relay Rutherford happening this weekend on Saturday. The event is sponsored by StoneCrest Medical Center and benefits JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and their fight to find a cure for type 1 diabetes. More than 350 people from 55 teams are currently registered to participate in the race and have contributed over $22,000 to fund diabetes research. The event also incorporates hundreds of volunteers at 18 checkpoints along the way!

Rutherford County residents are encouraged to be aware of runners crossing streets and on roadsides in and around Eagleville, Rockvale, Murfreesboro, and Smyrna between 6 am and 6 pm on Saturday.

The Relay Rutherford race course covers approximately 53 miles in Rutherford County beginning in Eagleville, passing through Rockvale and Murfreesboro and ending at StoneCrest Medical Center in Smyrna, Tennessee. Runners will also honor the lives lost in the tragic Boston Marathon bombings by wearing a temporary tattoo on their arm throughout the race.

The race uses a staggered wave start with the first wave beginning at 6 a.m. Team finish times will range between 6 and 10 hours with runners rotating at designated 3 to 6 mile transition points. Teams may rotate runners as many times as necessary to finish the race, but every runner must run at least once.

The race is geared towards intermediate to advanced runners who can easily run a 5K distance or who want to challenge themselves by running multiple times in a single day.

All participants will receive a t-shirt and finisher’s medal presented by a child living with type 1 diabetes. The winning team in each category (male, female, and co-ed) will receive a prize. Prizes will also be awarded to the team that raises the most money, the best team uniforms and the best vehicle décor. Complimentary snacks and water will be available at designated checkpoints and picnic celebration will be available at the finish line.
