7,000 American Flags to be Placed at Headstones in the Stones River National Battlefield

Stones River National Battlefield and Cemetery will host a series of events to commemorate Memorial Day in 2014. On Saturday May 24, 2014 at 10 AM, scouting and other youth groups are invited to place flags on more than 7,000 headstones in Stones River National Cemetery.

Participants should enter the park using the entrance at 1563 North Thompson Lane and plan to arrive by 9:30 AM. Please carpool if possible. Parking will be adjacent to the park visitor center. Later arrivals may have to walk five to ten minutes to reach the cemetery.

The Memorial Day program will be at 1:30 PM Sunday May 25, 2014 at the rostrum in Stones River National Cemetery. Parking will be in the visitor center parking lot. We encourage visitors to enter the park at the entrance on North Thompson Lane. Visitors with disabilities will be directed to parking near the program.

The program will include patriotic music, a wreath laying ceremony and reading of the names of veterans who have passed away since last Memorial Day. Refreshments will be served after the program.

Groups may pre-register by calling 615-893-9501 or emailing us at stri_administration@nps.gov. All leaders will sign-in their groups Saturday morning before receiving their flags and section assignments. The registration table will be located just inside the pedestrian entrance to the cemetery.
