BBB offers the following general advice when working with home improvement contractors:
Never Make Full Payment in Advance and Never Pay with Cash or a Check. BBB suggests using a credit card for down payments, as credit cards protect consumers from financial losses from a non-performing contractor. Typically, a down payment of 30 to 50 percent of the total contract price is made before the work is started with remaining payments to be made after completion of each phase of work; final payment should not be made until work is completed and you have inspected the work. Vet the Contractor Carefully. Verify the business meets all state and local requirements including being licensed, insured, and bonded. Also ask the customer references from recent jobs to ensure the work is up to standard. Get at least three bids. Beware of lowball estimates that may potentially balloon over time or foreshadow shoddy work to come. Recognize the red flags. Beware of any contractor that uses high-pressure sales tactics or requires full payment upfront. Make sure everything is in writing. The full scope of the work should be explained in the contract including cleanup and disposal of waste. All verbal agreements need to be included in the written agreement. Pay close attention to the payment terms, estimated price of materials and labor and any warranties or guarantees.
