BBB - NatureScapes Landscaping & Lawn Care in Clarksville, TN Escapes Without Completing Work

BBB warns consumers of the business practices of Dontre Jones, owner of NatureScapes Landscaping & Lawn Care located in Clarksville, TN. BBB files contain numerous complaints that are of a serious nature from Fort Campbell military personnel alleging failure of the company to complete work as promised.  NatureScapes Landscaping & Lawn Care in Clarksville, TN has no affiliation with similar named businesses located elsewhere in Middle Tennessee.

Specifically, BBB files contain over $50,000 worth of complaints filed by military personnel or spouses of deployed soldiers alleging Dontre Jones accepted deposits for landscaping and lawn care services with promised completion dates; however, customers state the company has not completed jobs as promised.  One consumer said, “I signed a contract with Dontre at NatureScapes and paid in full (over $6000) back in October 2010…. I still have garbage bags full of trash left in my yard from these people!  Not only did they not honor the contract, they took my money and ran, and they left a mess!”  Many more complaints alleged similar issues.

BBB contacted Mr. Jones on numerous occasions requesting his immediate attention in resolving these complaints; however, these matters remain unresolved in BBB files. BBB offers the following general advice when working with home improvement contractors:

Never Make Full Payment in Advance and Never Pay with Cash or a Check. BBB suggests using a credit card for down payments, as credit cards protect consumers from financial losses from a non-performing contractor. Typically, a down payment of 30 to 50 percent of the total contract price is made before the work is started with remaining payments to be made after completion of each phase of work; final payment should not be made until work is completed and you have inspected the work.
Vet the Contractor Carefully. Verify the business meets all state and local requirements including being licensed, insured, and bonded. Also ask the customer references from recent jobs to ensure the work is up to standard.
Get at least three bids. Beware of lowball estimates that may potentially balloon over time or foreshadow shoddy work to come.
Recognize the red flags. Beware of any contractor that uses high-pressure sales tactics or requires full payment upfront.
Make sure everything is in writing. The full scope of the work should be explained in the contract including cleanup and disposal of waste. All verbal agreements need to be included in the written agreement. Pay close attention to the payment terms, estimated price of materials and labor and any warranties or guarantees.
