School Resource Officers will seek donations to send several Special Olympians to the state competition during a Wings and Rings fundraiser Tuesday 4/21/15 at Toot's.

Special Olympics co-chair John Harris said the athletes will be chosen from the 450-plus mentally challenged athletes who competed in the Rutherford County competition April 9 at MTSU. Athletes chosen for the state games will compete in the running long jump, softball throw, 100-meter and 50-meter dash and the 25-meter wheelchair race.

Events for the all-volunteer Special Olympics are funded through donations and fundraisers such as Wings and Rings. The event will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Toot's at 860 N.W. Broad Street.

"We would not be able to send our athletes to the state without the help of Toot's and the SROs," Harris said. "Everyone is always so supportive."

Toot's general manager Spencer Wilson said people who support the event will have fun, joke and laugh and enjoy the good food. The restaurant will feature a chicken wings and onion rings special for the event.

"Wings and Rings draws in a pretty good crowd," Wilson said. "We want to help Special Olympics in our area."

SRO Jacque Bauer, who coordinates the event for the SROs, said the event raises money for the Special Olympians to compete.

"The SROs enjoy asking for donations to help these special athletes from Rutherford County and Murfreesboro schools," SRO Bauer said.
