In 1976, Realtor Bill Carey coordinated a new fundraiser to benefit the American Diabetes Association, among other local needs and requests. His new idea was to sponsor a one-day golf scramble with 144 players on a warm June afternoon with fun and prizes for everyone.

This event was held at his new development on Highway 231 called Fox Run. The four-man format allowed any player to be a part of the team regardless of skill level, since scores were based on the best-ball from each team's shots. If a player got a hole-in-one, he or she would win a new car. Many other gifts and prizes were added to engage more players and support for the American Diabetes Association.

In 1997, Carey realized the need to provide additional support for the local Realtor Scholarship Fund, so he volunteered to share the proceeds of the golf scramble to help fund more student scholarships. Over the years, many other groups have started a tradition of fun and funds through golf scrambles.

This is the original and first charity golf scramble in Rutherford County 38 years strong. It has raised more than $230,000 to support Diabetes research and college scholarships.
