Blackman Girls Claim District Tournament Championship, Riverdale Takes 3rd

There's a new district champion in girls basketball. WGNS' Bryan Barrett has a recap of last (Monday) night's games and a preview of tonight's boys championships...

 

The Blackman girls used a 16-0 run in the second quarter to beat Oakland 60-37. The Lady Blaze, now 27-and-1, shot light out from the field. They were 25-of-36 for 69-percent with two threes. The Lady Patriots shot only 36-percent. Blackman also got very balanced scoring. Crystal Dangerfield, Alex Johnson and MeMe Jackson all had 14 points with Jazz Bond chipping in 13. The Lady Pats were led in scoring by Kiara Howse's 11. Blackman will host 6-and-25 Franklin County Friday night in the first round of the region. Oakland will host 15-and-11 Lincoln County. All region quarterfinal games begin at 7pm.

The Riverdale girls also had a good shooting night in their 93-75 win over Smyrna. They shot 58-percent for the game and were 23-of-33 from the foul line for 77-percent. The game was riddled with fouls. There were 63 free throws in the game. The Lady Bulldogs' Allie Bolton led the way with 19 points. Tyra Hughes followed with 14. Riverdale's Alexa Middleton had 30 points, with Hannah Pendergrass scoring 23. With Riverdale taking third place, they'll travel to District 8's runner-up, Columbia. The Lady Lions were upset by Shelbyville. WGNS will broadcast this game Friday night from Columbia. Pregame begins at 6:45 with a 7pm tipoff. Smyrna will travel to Shelbyville, the District 8 champion. Smyrna has beaten Shelbyville twice this year in the regular season.

The undefeated Siegel boys will try to unseat two-time defending district tournament champion Blackman tonight (Tuesday). That game tips around 7:30 after the La Vergne / Smyrna boys consolation game at 6. WGNS airtime is 5:50, right after All Sports Talk.
