The academy has four components: academics with a major focus, research culminating in a senior project, extra-curricular requirements and a real-life experience requirement. Students will complete at least 12 credits in advanced honors, Advanced Placement, or dual enrollment classes. Students will also be required to take a speech course or a critical-thinking course, as well as a senior capstone course, principal Dr. Leisa Justus said. Robert Rickman, WGNS news.

"Students will benefit from the academy's rigor and their exposure to the diversity, enthusiasm and community of the 'Blackman Experience,'" Justus said. "In addition to enabling students to vie for valedictorian status or state recognition for graduation with honors and/or distinction, students completing the academy will be unique and competitive as qualifications increase for college admission and scholarships."

The program is open to those students zoned for Blackman High School. The meeting for parents will begin at 6 p.m. in the school's library. Additional information, including the application process, will be provided on the Blackman High School webpage,www.bhs.rcs.k12.tn.us.
