Blackman & Oakland Girls Advance; Central Magnet Suffers Loss

The news from Sparta...

and from Murfreesboro...

as two local teams make the state's Elite 8. Blackman and Oakland girls will make up one-quarter of the competition of the field in this year's Class Triple-A Blue Cross Basketball Championships at MTSU's Murphy Center.

NewsRadio WGNS' Bryan Barrett was in White County as Oakland, playing in front of a rowdy home crowd, quickly silenced their hosts with a 73-58 win. Abby Wright had 29 points while Shelby Gibson added 24 for the Lady Patriots. It's Oakland's first trip to the state tournament since 2005, when they made it to the semifinals.

NewsRadio WGNS' Jon Dinkins had the call of the game from Blackman, which saw the defending state and national champs cruise to a 75-47 win over Cumberland County. Miss Basketball finalist Crystal Dangerfield twisted her ankle early in the game and did not return as a precaution. The Lady Blaze built a 41-19 lead at the half and didn't look back. Miss Basketball finalist Alex Johnson had 19 in the game, K.K. Williams added 15.

The Central Magnet Lady Tigers season came to an end in the sectionals, with a 56-47 loss at McMinn Central. With the game tied in the fourth, freshman Jordan Wright hit a big three-pointer to give the Chargerettes a lead they'd never relinquish. Central's Claudia Smith led both teams in scoring with 25. The Lady Tigers went 25-and-7 this season under Coach Steve Willey.

Oakland will be first up for Rutherford County teams in the Blue Cross Basketball Championships, taking on 22-and-10 Bartlett Wednesday morning at 11:30.
