This coming Monday evening Brown's Chapel Elementary students who wrote the book, "Stop! Look! Listen! How Do Elephants Stay Safe at School?" will sign their book at Barnes & Noble in The Avenue. The event is open to the public from 5:00 until 8:00 Monday, September 28th. The students will sign at 6:00 o'clock. A percentage of the books purchases will benefit Brown's Chapel Elementary. The book fair includes story time and a safety song sing-along.

Students wrote the book after Sheriff's Sgt. Bill West, the school resource officer assigned to the county school, envisioned the book as a way to teach elementary school students about safety without scaring them.

During the last academic year, Sgt. West approached school media specialist Kimberly Barlow about the idea.

Sgt. West, Barlow, art teacher Amanda Henry, music teacher Jenna Rose and 5th grade enrichment students joined to write, illustrate and publish the children's book, "Stop! Look! Listen! How Do Elephants Stay Safe at School?"

Barlow said an elephant is the main character.

"We don't want to scare the kids but in any emergency...stop, look at your teacher and listen," Barlow said in explaining the theme of the book. "Just listen to your teacher. It all comes to stop, look and listen."

Henry said students used pen and water colors to draw the elephants. Each elephant had a distinct style.

"All elephants have something unique about them," Henry said, explaining the expressions show the moods of the elephants.

Rose said the music students wrote a song relating to the book's message.
