A burn permit is required... The Division of Forestry has notified local media that Rutherford County residents must obtain a burn permit now through May 15, 2015 if they plan to do any outdoor burning. The permits are free, but required.

To obtain a burn permit, call 1-877-350-2876. Last year, 6,427 burn permits were issued for Rutherford County alone, according to David Warren, Forest Technician with the Division of Forestry.

Burn permits for backyard recreational fires that are 3-foot in diameter or less are not required.
