The TSSAA Board of Control voted to again shake up high school sports classification - especially for football. In a meeting on Wednesday, they voted to expand Division II football from two to three classifications and to end the 32 team Class 6A in Division I.

Blackman, Oakland, Siegel, Smyrna and Riverdale all are in the current "Super 32," while Stewarts Creek and La Vergne are in Class 5A. That will change beginning with next season and be in place for at least four-years. All football teams statewide will be divided equally into six classifications. Based on enrollment, that will likely put all Rutherford County large high schools back in the same district/region for football.

There was a proposal to expand the Division I classifications to six in most sports, but that failed. Other major sports like basketball, softball and baseball will remain divided into three classes for D-I. Girls and boys soccer, which was only in two classes before, will also join that group.

The Board of Control also voted to keep the independent school multiplier at 1.8. However, they did remove restrictions that have prevented those schools from moving up more than one classification.
