Jason Reed, a driver for the Murfreesboro Solid Waste Department, has been named STARS award recipient for March 2016. Mayor Shane McFarland recognized Reed during the March 10, 2016, meeting of the Murfreesboro City Council with the STARS award for Outstanding Performance: "Succeeding Through Attitudes Reflecting Service Excellence."

The nomination stemmed from Reed's on-duty response to a 15-year-old female threatened by two aggressive pit bulls. Reed is another example of representing the City in a positive light, exhibiting the core values and creating a better quality of life for citizens.

Mayor Shane McFarland presented Reed with the STARS award, congratulating him for receiving one of the highest awards given to a City employee.

Reed has served the City and the Solid Waste Department since February 2005, first as a Laborer before being promoted to Driver in 2006. He was recognized for his quick action and compassion while working for his department on September 18, 2015. Reed was nominated by Jennifer Smith.

In the nomination, the following narrative explanation was provided:

"A phone call was received from 3119 Turret Way at 1309 on 09/18/15 advising [that] Mr. Reed was picking up trash during his course of business this date. The citizen advised that her 15-year-old daughter was walking to school and came upon two very aggressive Pit Bulls running at large and Mr. Reed saw them starting to approach the girl. He then stopped his garbage truck, blew his horn to distract the dogs from the girl, and once he had their attention he exited his truck with his shovel and escorted the girl back to her mother to ensure they did not attack her. The mother was extremely grateful and said if Mr. Reed had not taken the actions that he took her daughter would have, without a doubt, been severely mauled by the dogs running at large. She did not know how to thank him, so she called the administrative office to let us know."

The STARS Service Excellence program is intended to recognize outstanding employees who embody the city's standards for service excellence and exemplify the city's core service values. The purpose of the STARS award is to recognize and reward those employees who go above and beyond their normal job duties in providing outstanding customer service to internal and external customers.

Congratulations to Solid Waste driver Jason Reed for being named the recipient of the STARS Award for Outstanding Performance.
