City Takes Steps to Maintain Safety of Panhandlers, Motorists

In the recent weeks, WGNS has received an influx of calls and concerns regarding the homeless population in certain areas of the city.  It seems as though the city council had been getting similar complaints as well, and took action on the measure, drafting a brochure with information concerning all of the outreach services available in Murfreesboro, to be distributed to panhandlers in an effort to drive them towards those resources rather than the streets.  Murfreesboro City Councilman Eddie Smotherman explains…

Smotherman says that although the act of solicitation itself is not a crime, YOU can actually get in trouble for holding up traffic while donating money to a panhandler…

He adds that even with warmer weather ahead, there is not expected to be a noticeable increase in the number of those on the streets…
