What is buried underneath the ground has the potential of telling us more about the military engagements that have changed the course of history. To discuss the approach and significance of Conflict Archaeology, the MTSU Center for Historic Preservation is proud to host Damian Shiels, an archaeologist with the Ireland-based firm Rubicon Heritage, for a special public lecture on November 13, 2014. Mr. Shiels will discuss "Conflict Archaeology and Its Role in Understanding the Past" with MTSU students, faculty, and staff at the Heritage Center of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County at 1 p.m. on November 13, 2014. The event is free and open to the public.

Damian Shiels has been with Rubicon Heritage Services (formerly Headland Archaeology Ireland) since 2006, first as Post-Excavation Manager and later as Operations Manager. In that time he has managed a large number of high profile projects, ranging from post-excavation works on major road schemes to archaeological consultancy projects for central Government, such as the Irish Battlefields Project and the National Archaeological Archive Scoping Report. Prior to joining the company Damian worked as an Assistant Keeper at the National Museum of Ireland, and was part of the team that created the awarded winning 'Soldiers & Chiefs' military history exhibition. He is also a specialist in military archaeology and has published and lectured internationally on topics such as conflict archaeology, the post-excavation process and archaeology and social media.
