Despite a goal to originally do away with the Rutherford County wheel tax long ago, it is still needed

The wheel tax in Rutherford County was initially put into place to build Oakland and Riverdale High Schools. County Mayor Ernest Burgess says that despite its original intent, it is still needed today (1:17).

So for now, the wheel tax will stay and could even be increased in the future.

For the privilege of using the public roads and highways in this county, residents of Rutherford County must pay the county privilege or wheel tax, on each motor vehicle they might own. This tax is paid annually.
