State Representative Mike Sparks (R–Smyrna) joined with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation recently to participate in the Bureau's Citizens’ Academy. Representative Sparks is the first Tennessee lawmaker to do so.

“The TBI Citizens’ Academy gives interested people an up-close, hands-on look at the extensive work our Agents do every day,” said TBI Director Mark Gwyn. “We’re thankful for every participant who makes the effort to sacrifice their time and hope they come away with a new appreciation for the TBI’s role in fighting crime in Tennessee.”

The TBI Citizens' Academy was designed to develop a better understanding and awareness in the community of what the TBI experiences on a daily basis. The four week academy offers local citizens a peek at the TBI's work, ranging from its investigations of homicides, crime scenes, and cyber crime, to the Fusion Center with terrorism tracking information and criminal activity related to Tennessee.

"I want to thank TBI Director Mark Gwyn and his staff for assisting all of the participants with this fantastic program," said Representative Mike Sparks. "I was impressed with the level of professionalism of those involved and salute the efforts of the TBI to combat the serious threats facing our state on a daily basis."
