A man who entered onto an I-24 exit ramp heading the wrong direction was stopped by Murfreesboro Police on Wednesday evening around 6:30. Police say they spotted 37 year old Richard John Mooney not only enter onto interstate 24 in the wrong direction, but also fail to stop for the patrol car. Officer Zachery Ferrell said that he then lost contact with the subject who was driving a 2008 Dodge Avenger.

The vehicle later got off of the interstate and headed North on the Old Salem Highway (Highway 99). Another officer then observed the same Dodge on West Castle Street where the driver was said to have again, driven away from police. Mooney then got onto South Church Street and turned onto Broad Street. Police say the driver started passing vehicles with "no regard for the public safety." For a second time, police again lost contact with Mooney and the pursuit was called off.

Later in the evening dispatch got a phone call about the same subject who almost struck several cars and fled the scene. Police again caught up with Mooney and he eventually ran off the road. His car was so badly damaged that he could no longer drive.

Mooney jumped out of his car and fled the scene on foot, but he was caught by officers within seconds.

Mooney, who lives in Mount Juliet, was charged with:

  • His second DUI
  • Driving on a Revoked License
  • Felony Evading Arrest
  • Having an Altered Tag
  • Failure to Exercise Do Care
  • Possessing an Open Container of Alcohol

Mooney was booked under a $139,500 bond and is scheduled to face the charges in court on August 15, 2016.
