Drug "Take Back" this morning in La Vergne and 'Boro, "Gun Buy Back" in 'Boro only!

October is almost over, but this is Prescription Month and old prescriptions are being this morning here in Murfreesboro and in La Vergne. In addition, Murfreesboro Police are also buying back guns at the local collection site here. 

Murfreesboro

Drugs:  Here in the 'Boro, the Murfreesboro Police Department is conducting both a "drug take back" and a "gun buy back" program in the parking lot of St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital (Medical Center Parkway). This is from 8:00 this morning up until 12-noon. 

Guns:  In addition to the drug take back, Murfreesboro Police Department handing out Kroger gift cards in exchange for guns and taking prescription drugs no longer being used on Saturday, MTSU will be participating in a similar event today (minus the gun take back program). Murfreesboro Police will be at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital on Saturday between 8am and 12noon “taking back” guns and prescription drugs. 

La Vergne

If you live nearer to La Vergne, take your old prescriptions by Walgreen's in La Vergne between 10:00 this morning (Saturday, 10/26/13) and 2:00 this afternoon.  The pharmacy is at the corner of Murfreesboro Road and Waldron Road.  

According to the DEA, the initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.  Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Further, medications that are flushed downt he toilet or thrown in the trash may cause potential safety and health hazards.

The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

MTSU held theirs Friday

In an effort to serve students who might go home over the weekend, MTSU held their drug take back program Friday. 

It was the second MTSU Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, and authorities there not the event was so successful that Campus Pharmacy, Public Safety and Health Promotion organizers immediately began planning for the third one. In addition to the Murfreesboro Police Department handing out Kroger gift cards in exchange for guns and taking prescription drugs no longer being used on Saturday, MTSU will be participating in a similar event today (minus the gun take back program). Murfreesboro Police will be at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital on Saturday between 8am and 12noon “taking back” guns and prescription drugs. MTSU Public Safety will be set up TODAY (Friday) taking back prescription drugs no longer being used.

Lisa Schrader, director of MTSU Health Promotion, added that events like these help prevent inappropriate and illicit use of medications as well as environmental damage that could occur if medicines are flushed into the water supply.

“October is Medicine Abuse Awareness Month, and the campus drug take-back event gives the MTSU community an opportunity to get medicines they no longer need out of their homes and out of danger of being misused.
