Farmers Market to Accept EBT Cards

The Rutherford County Farmers Market is trying something new that will make it easier for low income residents to buy fresh fruits and vegetables.  Starting in May, the Farmers Market will accept E-B-T cards. E-B-T stands for Electronic Benefit Transfer. The E-B-T card allows state governments to provide financial and material benefits to recipients via a plastic debit card.

Despite this being a new service to Murfreesboro, it is not new to Farmers Markets in other areas like Nashville, Memphis and Knoxville. The acceptance of E-B-T cards at the Murfreesboro Farmers Market is made possible by a grant from the USDA’s Farmers’ Market Promotion Program and a new partnership with Middle Tennessee State University’s School of Agribusiness/Agriscience. The Farmers Market is located behind the UT Agriculture Extension office on John Rice Boulevard.
