Legislation that would increase the fine for not wearing a seat belt is scheduled to be heard by lawmakers this week. Versions of the bill were to be heard in the Senate Finance Committee and the House Transportation Committee on last week. However, they were delayed in each committee until Tuesday. Currently the penalty for not wearing a seat belt is $10. Under this proposal, the fine would be $50. Sponsors say the measure is simply to encourage people to buckle up.
