Smyrna Police had to pursue a suspect just before 9:00 on Tuesday morning. Sgt. Bobby Gibson told News Radio WGNS, "One of our traffic officers initiated a traffic stop on Lee Victory Pkwy at Legacy Drive. " When the officer made contact with the driver of the silver Nissan Maxima, the man was asked to step out of the vehicle. From there, things got interesting.
Gibson told us:
"After making contact with the driver, Ricky A. Bigsby, the officer determined Bigsby did not have a license and prepared to place Bigsby in custody. Bigsby jerked away from the officer, re-entered his vehicle and sped away on Lee Victory Pkwy, toward I-24."
The officer attempted to catch up to the evading vehicle and located it on One Mile Lane at Peebles Drive. The vehicle had crashed in a ditch and the driver fled on foot. K9 units from the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office responded and assisted Smyrna units with locating the suspect. A K9 team located the suspect in a nearby neighborhood and Bigsby was taken into custody.
Ricky A. Bigsby, age 39, was arrested for Resisting Arrest, Evading Arrest, Driving on a Revoked License, Simple Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Cocaine, Possession for Resale and Possession of a Weapon by a Felon. His bond was set at $30,000 and is currently detained at the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office. As of Tuesday night, he has not made bond.
