For the fifth-consecutive year, LaVergne Middle School will host a free Thanksgiving meal open to the entire community. The meal will be served from 3:45-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at the school, located at 382 Stones River Road in La Vergne.

The school has offered the meal ever since Cary Holman became principal five years ago. He previously offered a similar meal for the three years he was principal at Central Middle School in Murfreesboro.

The school typically serves more than 700 meals during the event each year, Holman said.

It takes the entire school and its community partners to make the meal a reality, Holman said. The school held a food drive for two weeks with each grade level assigned a different item. In addition, community business partners provide supplies, the clubs and athletic teams provide hams and turkeys, and employees provide cornbread for the dressing and bring desserts.

"The community has been real supportive," Holman said. "The fire department, police department and city officials also come here to serve."

Holman says the success of the community meal has inspired other schools to consider similar events in the future, including former LaVergne Middle School students who are considering hosting a Christmas-time meal at their high school.
