With single digit temperatures expected this week, La Vergne officials are alerting residents to check on neighbors, the elderly, and others who may be in need of extra attention. Police Chief Mike Walker tells NewsRadio WGNS they're instructing police officers, firefighters, public works and utilities personnel, and other employees who work outside to use extra caution. He adds they also want to make sure citizens check on friends and family during the cold outbreak.

La Vergne Fire Chief Rick McCormick says there are signs of hypothermia that people should be aware of as well. He suggests watching for shivering, clumsiness, slurred speech or mumbling, confusion, and drowsiness. Plus, in children and infants, watch for bright red skin that is cold, as well as low energy levels. If you suspect someone has hypothermia, get them to a warm room, remove any wet clothing, and begin warming them with blankets and warm liquids.
