Fugitive wanted on sexual abuse charges captured in Murfreesboro

A fugitive wanted for sexual abuse charges in Florida was nabbed Thursday in Murfreesboro by Rutherford County Sheriff's Office deputies.

Fugitive David L. Smalls, 44, of Elko, S.C., was taken into custody about 9 a.m. at the Pilot service center on South Church Street, said Sheriff's Detective Chuck Thomas, who is assigned to the U.S. Marshal's Task Force.

Smalls is wanted in Jacksonville, Fla., on two counts of sexual battery, Detective Thomas said.

The U.S. Marshals in Florida notified the U.S. Marshals in Nashville they believed Smalls was in the Rutherford County area. Thomas found Smalls inside his truck parked at Pilot. Detective Thomas, joined by Capt. Terry McBurney, Sgt. Randy Morrow and Deputy Jack Keisling of the Fugitive Squad.

"We were able to apprehend him in his vehicle," Detective Thomas said.

Deputy Keisling transported Smalls to Rutherford County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with being a fugitive. He is being held without bond while awaiting extradition to Florida.
