Like handguns? Well, apparently 5.5 percent of the residents in Rutherford County like handguns. According to Gene Kennedy with LegallyArmed.com, as of May 7th of this year, 16,554 people have an active handgun permit in Rutherford County. As we stated in the opening of this story, that is only about 5.5 percent of the population.

While 5.5 percent indeed sounds like a low statistic, the number is growing relatively fast. In 2012, the state of Tennessee issued 114,031 handgun carry permits. Of that number, 45.9 percent were NEW permits. Of that number, the counties with the most permits issued were Shelby (13,860), Davidson (7,609), Knox (7,521), Hamilton (5,048), and of course Rutherford (4,830).
