Some 500 mentally challenged athletes from Rutherford County and Murfreesboro schools will compete in the annual Special Olympics track and field meet April 9 at MTSU. The meet is funded solely on donations.

Sheriff Robert Arnold and School Resource Officers will ask diners for donations to pay for the bus transportation costs and other expenses of the track and field meet. The event will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Volunteer Special Olympics co-chair Lou Paschall said Special Olympics athletes often do not have the opportunity to compete in physical activities.

"It's a day when they are the stars," Paschall said. "They come into contact with MTSU Blue Raiders athletes. That's unique to have a day when everyone is focused on them."

The spirit of the day continues to glow for the athletes. Paschall talked with a Special Olympian several months after the competition.

"When that young man pulled the ribbon out of this pocket, it showed this really means something to him," Paschall said.

Toot's South General Manager Nick Hays said Toot's will offer diners 10 traditional chicken wings and a half order of onion rings for $5.99 during Wings and Rings.

"Toot's is Rutherford County's restaurant to many people and generations," Hays said. "We love our community and support people who are in the need of the most help. Rutherford County Special Olympics needs our help. That's why we do this event."
