A hostage situation just barely out of Rutherford County ended after approximately six hours near mile marker 101 on I-24 west Monday (6/1/2015). Officials with the Coffee County Sheriffs Office say that one person is dead and two were taken to the hospital.

Around 5:30 Monday morning, the Coffee County dispatch received a call from a cell phone. No one spoke on the other end, but the telecommunicator could hear what was going on. Thanks to modern technology, they were able to locate the cell phone and rush deputies to the incident.

When deputies arrived, they discovered 24-year old Jose Luis Garcia standing on the side of the interstate holding five others at gunpoint. It's not clear what his reasons were, but while officers were attempting to talk with the suspect--he shot himself and died at the scene. That bullet then hit two of the five who had all been traveling together to Nashville. The injured were rushed with non life-threatening injuries to the ER.

It's not known why these six persons were together in the Chevy Avalanche pickup, or why Garcia ordered the driver to pull to the side of the road where he allegedly held them hostage at gunpoint for approximately six-hours. We do know that Garcia had earlier violated his parole on aggravated robbery charges.
