Understanding human behavior can prove quite difficult, but with the right insight, that process can be made simpler.

That's precisely what John Daniel, chief human resources officer for First Horizon National Corporation, parent company of First Tennessee Bank and FTN Financial, learned through David Rock's SCARF Model.

Daniel quotes Rock as having said, "In a world of increasing interconnectedness and rapid change, there is a growing need to improve the way people work together. Understanding the true drivers of human social behavior is becoming ever more urgent in this environment."

This model can be applied in any situation where people collaborate in groups, including all types of workplaces, educational environments, family settings, and general social events, according to Rock, who serves as CEO of Results Coaching Systems International and NeuroLeadership Institute Editor of NeuroLeadership Journal, Rock.

Daniel is slated to keynote RUTHERFORD Cable's monthly breakfast meeting from 7:15-9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at Stones River Country Club, located at 1830 N.W. Broad St. in Murfreesboro.

"As a human resources executive I am often faced with big and important questions," Daniel said.

Those questions can include:

  • How does a leader motivate people when traditional behaviorist motivators don't work or aren't available?
  • What triggers unproductive behaviors by smart otherwise, emotionally healthy and talented people?
  • Why do people resist change?

During his presentation, Daniel will provide attendees with an understanding of the SCARF Model and how he uses it to help leaders answer these big questions and improve their ability to lead and collaborate with others, while drawing out the natural talent and abilities in those they lead.

The SCARF Model is based on creating a rewarding state based on the following:

  • Status - Our relative importance to others
  • Certainty - Our ability to predict the future
  • Autonomy - Our sense of control and choice
  • Relatedness - Our sense of safety with others
  • Fairness - Our perception of fair exchanges between people

RUTHERFORD Cable members and guests are welcome, and the public is invited to attend; the cost for this meeting is $20 and includes breakfast. Reservations are available online at rutherfordcable.org and must be completed by Thursday, March 3.
