Right now, the gas tax that you pay when you fill your vehicle with fuel has flat lined in Tennessee and remains stagnant. That being said, there are few dollars available locally to create and repair roads. There is also a lack of revenue to pay for any type of mass transit system that would take residents to and from Nashville. In the past, the idea of a subway or monorail system that connects Rutherford County to Davidson County have been suggested. Rutherford County Mayor Ernest Burgess commented on that idea...

Presently, the idea of a monorail between Murfreesboro and Nashville is dead in the water.

What exactly is a monorail and why is it different from a traditional train?

A monorail is a railway in which the track consists of a single rail. Unlike traditional train tracks that are on the ground and cross over busy streets, a monorail has a single elevated track or rail that is above vehicle traffic so that the rail cars can increase speed and avoid collisions. Train tracks have two rails that are on the ground.
