In the past there had been reports of long waits at the local drivers license center, so WGNS News decided to see if any changes had been made that reduced the wait time.
Earlier stories of spending an afternoon at the facility have changed dramatically. This service is coordinated by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, and they have instituted several practices as the Samsonite Drive facility that have reduced the wait.
WGNS tested two different procedures.
The first was a simple renewal, but to get a new photo as well. The courteous consultant at the front desk directs the client to a computer kiosk. For a person with little computer skills, this could be accomplished in less than 15-minutes. That's total time from walking-in to leaving the facility. If you are extremely comfortable with computers, this took 5 to 10 minutes.
The other test was to make a major change on a driver's license. This could be name or address change or any issue that took working with an attendant. When you walk-in to the complex a person directs you either to the computer kiosk or gives you a number.
There are three sets of numbers being worked by several very courteous attendants. While WGNS was observing the procedures, a large electronic sign on the rear wall showed the number of persons waiting for service. It seemed to stay in the range of 17.
The procedure to make changes took a little longer, but nothing like the day-long nightmares reported in the past. It took about an hour to make a major change.
Overall, there have been major improvements at the local driver's license center here in Murfreesboro. Please let us know about your experiences.
