Murfreesboro Fire and Rescue, along with Stones River National Battlefield staff and others have worked to contain the fire to the left side of the new main enterance. The fire burned about five acres and it's believed to have started from someone throwing a cigarette out of a window. Battlefield officials told WGNS that they sometimes do "controlled burns," but this was not one of those times. With dry conditions and lots of fuel from dead grass and leaves, large fires can start easily. All it takes is someone throwing a cigarette butt out the window to start such a blaze like we saw Wednesday. Check WGNSRadio.com for photos, videos and listen to our on-scene reports.
