Homer Pittard Campus School graduated their last sixth grade class on Tuesday. Now, the school will only go to fifth grade. The Campus School has had a sixth grade class for the past 101-years.

The Campus School first opened in 1911and was originally a school for first through eighth graders. In 1927, the school added ninth and tenth grades, but later dropped both. The school became a kindergarten through sixth grade school in 1972. The decision to drop grades seventh and eighth was made because Central High School was converted into a middle school for seventh and eighth graders in ’72.

The Campus School is a public school operated jointly by Middle Tennessee State University and Rutherford County Public Schools. Middle Tennessee State University’s Campus School was created as a Laboratory School for the University’s Education Department by an act of the General Assembly in 1909.  In 1911, Middle Tennessee Normal College (as MTSU was known at that time) opened an elementary school in the administration building on the University’s campus. The head of the Education Department served as director.

In January 1929, the school moved into a new facility on the corner of Lytle Street and North Tennessee Boulevard, where the school is today.
