The 3rd annual Parade of Lights in La Vergne has been scheduled for Saturday, December 7 at 6:00 p.m. The parade theme is “A Christmas Morning in La Vergne.”
Mary Jane Skinner, one of the most active and recognizable residents of the city, has been named grand marshal for the 2013 parade. Skinner has lived in La Vergne for 53 years. She worked as a lunch lady at Roy Waldron Elementary School for 30 years before retiring in 2005.
“The people who live here are very generous and wonderful,” said Skinner. “I just love living in La Vergne and always have. I am glad to see it grow.”
Skinner is a Sergeant with the La Vergne Rescue Squad, a member of both the Senior Citizen Advisory Board and the Stormwater Advisory Board, and is active in Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. Skinner and her husband, John W., have been married 58 years and have three sons and four grandchildren.
Lineup for the Parade of Lights is at 5:00 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park. The parade will begin at 6:00 p.m. and end at La Vergne City Hall, where the city will have its annual tree lighting ceremony. Several schools will perform Christmas songs and B&B Family Fireworks is hosting a free fireworks show for the community.
“Our Christmas parade is a great way for our city to kick off the holiday season,” said Mayor Senna Mosley. “This is our third annual event and it’s exciting to see how much it has grown! I hope everyone comes out to watch the beautiful floats and fireworks, and then enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and say hello to Santa Claus.”
Prizes will be given for best parade entries. There is no fee to enter, but the parade entry deadline is December 3. Contact the Parks & Rec Department at 793-3224 for more information.
