Light Snow, Big Problems

The first snowfall of the year may not have been accumulating, but it did cause its share of problems. Black ice formed on roadways Thursday night and was enough to close county schools on Friday. Several big problems were reported. Thompson Lane was closed at 6pm for about 30-minutes because of icing over the Broad Street bridge. A crash on Cripple Creek Road involved several vehicles. Several bridges and overpasses on 840, John Bragg Highway and many others were slick because of the black ice. That occurs when  melted snow freezes as temperatures drop. Overnight temperatures were in the low 20's. Murfreesboro Police spokesman Kyle Evans says they responded to very few crashes because of icy roads. He credits motorists being extra careful and slowing down. Salt trucks were out all over Murfreesboro and Rutherford County during the overnight to limit icing on the roads. We will remain in the deep freeze Friday, with temperatures not expected to get much above the low 30's.
