Local 5th Grades Can Tap MTEMC's Tree Wise Program

Local school fifth grades can have a comprehensive tree care program delivered to their students beginning in late February. It’s a free service from Middle Tennessee Electric, and all it takes is a call to the cooperative’s Community Relations Coordinator, Cathy Mitchell. She says last year, they visited 27 schools over a three week period. Mitchell adds the curriculum includes classroom activities and discussions on how to transport, plant and care for trees. Students go home with a tree sapling to plant with their families as part of an after school project to let the children practice what they learned. Through the program, MTEMC also stresses the importance of not planting trees under power lines. Fifth-grade teachers in MTEMC’s service area may contact Mitchell at 494-1065 to schedule their free program.
