A man who allegedly assaulted his father and two children last week died Sunday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

Brian Gum, 45, of Smyrna allegedly caused injuries to his father, Dale Gum, 72, of Smyrna, a 13-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl Thursday at a home on One Mile Lane near Smyrna, said Detective Lt. Britt Reed.

“The boy defended against the assault and subdued Brian Gum,” said Lt. Reed. “He (Brian Gum) was fatally injured.”

The 11-year-old girl is still recovering at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. Dale Gum was later admitted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and later released. The boy was treated and released Thursday night from StoneCrest Medical Center in Smyrna.

Sheriff Robert Arnold called the domestic assault a tragedy but credited the boy with possibly saving his life and the lives of his grandfather and sister.

Detectives worked over the weekend to continue the investigation. Once completed, detectives were expected to review the case with District Attorney William Whitesell.
