Good news for Rutherford County residents; the local economy is rebounding from the economic downturn of previous years.  WGNS' Zach Troutman has the details...

City School Growth

Murfreesboro City School Director of Administrative Services told WGNS that there was a 5 per cent growth in the city schools during its peak. He noted that the previous year's numbers show 4.3 per cent.

Fewer Unemployed

More strong news from the state show that 5.8 per cent of Rutherford County's workforce were unemployed this past December. When you compare that to the same month in previous years, it shows a dramatic upswing in employment. It was 6.7 per cent in 2011, 8.1 per cent in 2010, and 9.7 per cent in 2009.

How does Rutherford County's 5.8 per cent compare to the national picture? Ironically, Tennesse and the U.S. figures were identical at 7.6 per cent.

Home Construction UP

Another positive sign is with building permits. There were 81 home permits issued in Murfreesboro last month. That was where most of the construction growth has been happening, and that with home construction. January saw 7 home construction permits issued in La Vergne, 6 in Smyrna. In the non municipal area of Rutherford County, 40 home building permits were issued in January, 2013.
