The case involving a Rutherford County School bus driver who was charged last year (2014) with DUI, Leaving the Scene of an Accident and Reckless Endangerment, is now closed.

53-Year Jeffery Layne drove a school bus for Stewartsboro Elementary School in Smyrna at the time that the charges were filed.

The accident that landed Layne in hot water occurred at Chick-Fil-A in Murfreesboro. After the minor collision in the parking lot of the restaurant, Layne allegedly fled the scene in his personal vehicle. He then got into the school bus that he operated for the county school system and went on his afternoon bus route, according to police.

After transporting children, MPD Officer Zachary Ferrell wrote in a report, "I was informed by phone that Mr. Layne returned to Stewartsboro and that Deputy Grisham had contact with him." The report shows that Layne was then charged with "Driving Under the Influence" after finishing his elementary school bus route.

Layne has been sentenced to spend 15-days behind bars for a DUI conviction and 30-days for the conviction of leaving the scene of an accident. Three charges of reckless endangerment have been dismissed. The courts told WGNS that Layne will also be on probation for 11 months and 29-days. He will report to the jail on January 15, 2015.

Layne no longer drives for the Rutherford County Schools.
