The Rotary Club of Murfreesboro had an emotion filled luncheon on Tuesday (5/24/2016) as they heard about the services of the Tennessee State Veterans Homes. Ironically, a former club president and district governor was a resident at the Murfreesboro facility on Compton Road. "Slick" Frazer was scheduled to visit his Rotary family at that meeting today, but instead three hours after the talk, Frazer's funeral visitation began.

After a tribute to Lieutenant Colonel Frazer, the Rotary Club heard how the four veterans' homes across the state constantly work to improve their service.

And that statement rang-true as Rotarians remember attending a festive and well-decorated fiftieth anniversary celebration for "Slick" and his wife Freda Sue at the Murfreesboro Tennessee Veterans Home last September. Delicious cake, Hors d'Oeuvres, decorations and more made the home's community room festive for this special event.

On June 10th the Tennessee Veterans Homes will celebrate its 25th anniversary. Presently, there are facilities in Murfreesboro, Knoxville, Humbolt and Clarksville.

Masden stressed that they are not a part of the Veterans Administration, but instead are a self-supporting non profit that is described as a state political sub division. As such, it is run by a board whose members are appointed by the governor.

Under the guidelines, 75 per cent of Tennessee Veterans Home residents must be honorably retired veterans. The remaining 25 per cent can be spouses of eligible veterans, widowed spouses or Gold Star parents.

Masden concluded by encouraging families who may have a need for services of this type in the near future to prepare for it by talking to their family physician and getting necessary documents for admittance together.
