Light winds and temps in the 70s attracted a packed Murfreesboro square Friday night (8/5/2016) for the third Friday Night Live of the summer season. This event is sponsored by Main Street Murfreesboro on the first Friday night of each month through September. It is open to the public and is free.

Main Street Executive Director Kathleen Herzog noted that it exposes many newcomers to the beauty and history of our town square, an area in which the Main Street program has been reclaiming history since being formed in 1985. At that time Main Street Murfreesboro/Rutherford County was charged with revitalizing the downtown area, and has been doing this now for 31-years.

The historic downtown district is currently undergoing another major expansion and revitalization. The center of the growth is the new Judicial Building that is being constructed one-block off the square. In addition, a major cloverleaf will take the Old Fort Parkway/Memorial Boulevard traffic over Broad Street without slowing the traffic. A second new entrance to the downtown area is being created around an artistic roundabout that leads to the Judicial Building.

Another new project is being studied with the development of mixed-housing and retail development a block off the square at North Church and College Streets. The city purchased the old First Methodist Church location. This full square-block of land had been converted into a bank.

In addition, the city is in the process of making plans for creating tourist attractions, greenways and more in what was known as "The Bottoms". Basically, that is the area around the historic Murfreesboro Train Depot, Cannonsburgh, Murfree Springs Wetland all the way to the Discovery Center. In fact, the City of Murfreesboro is conducting a workshop session this coming Tuesday evening from 5:00 to 8:00PM at the Patterson Community Center.

Over the years, the 15-story City Center, new library, city hall and other developments have brought more attention to the downtown Murfreesboro area. As these new project moves closer to fruition, the central city will take on even greater significance.

By the way, next month brings the final in the series of concerts with the O'Donnells from 6:30 to 9:30 Friday night, September 2nd.
