The scams are growing in Rutherford County. In one of several recent incidents, an unknown man sent a text to a woman claiming to be with the Sheriff’s Department. The potential victim called the number and the man who answered told the female he was a Rutherford County Sheriff’s Deputy.

The man on the phone told the victim that she needed to make payments for an accident she had been involved in several months ago. Several minutes into the conversation, the man changed his tune and said that he was a lawyer.

The female victim decided the conversation had gone on long enough and she called the actual Sheriff’s Office on the New Salem Highway. The Sheriff’s Office told the female they knew nothing about the call.

The phone number of where the text came from was 731-608-82**.
