One suspect taken into custody from Drug Court sprinted away from a sheriff’s deputy escorting him and two inmates to a sheriff’s vehicle about 9 a.m. Thursday outside the Judicial Building.

Suspect Travis Barrett, 20, of Leanna Central Valley Road was recaptured within two hours on Battle Avenue. He was charged with felony escape. Sheriff Robert Arnold said the deputy stayed with the two remaining inmates and immediately notified supervisors when Barrett fled. He says the deputy made the right choice in making sure the other two inmates were secure and not letting two other inmates escape.

Sheriff Arnold and top supervisors coordinated a search for Barrett, who was taken into custody from Drug Court. He was handcuffed and wore civilian clothes. He was previously charged with misdemeanor crimes. Deputies Jack Keisling and Randy Morrow from the Fugitive Squad received leads Barrett was near Kings Highway off Old Ford Parkway. Keisling says they got an address on January Street and when he and Deputy Morrow pulled up, Barrett was seen running in the back of the house and jumped two fences. When Deputy Morrow arrived, Deputy Keisling pointed him in Barrett’s direction. Deputy Morrow followed. When Barrett saw Deputy Morrow, he surrendered.

Barrett was charged with felony escape and theft. He is being held on $7,500 bond on the charges. A hearing is set July 15 in General Sessions Court.
