Mark Gullion has been named the new coordinator for Rutherford County Schools' Special Education program, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Richard Zago announced today.

Gullion succeeds former Special Education Coordinator Shirley Bell, who announced her retirement earlier this month. Gullion currently serves as the principal at Cedar Grove Elementary School, a position he has held for the past seven years.

"Mark is a charismatic leader," Zago said, "and he'll do the right thing when it comes to serving the children. He comes with the perspective of being a principal and will use his experience and passion to energize the excellent special education staff we already have in place."

Gullion has been an educator for 14 years. He has a bachelor's degree in early childhood education, a master's degree in administration and supervision, and a specialist degree in curriculum and instruction. Prior to serving as principal of Cedar Grove Elementary School, he served as an assistant principal for three years at Smyrna Primary School and Smyrna Elementary School.

"I am excited about the opportunity to lead the special education department with Rutherford County Schools," Gullion said. "Communication and clarity are important components to my leadership style, and our department's vision will be for students to reach their full potential."

Gullion will begin his new duties effective immediately. A new principal for Cedar Grove Elementary School will be announced soon.
