After jumping out to a 21-nothing lead, Maryville had to hold off a second half Oakland charge to defeat the Patriots 26-14 Friday night.

Oakland was able to only muster 100-yards of total offense in the first half while the Rebels racked up 221-yards.

The Patriots, however, took the opening series in the second half down the field and scored on an 11-yard run by Josh Cunningham. Then to close out the third quarter, backup quarterback Christian Haffner found George Gbeese (BEE-see)...

While Oakland's defense held the Rebels out of the endzone in the second half, they were able to score enough points to keep the Pats on the attack. A 35-yard field goal by Luke Orren with eight-and-a-half minutes left in the game put them up by two scores. Maryville added a late game safety for good measure.

Rebels quarterback Tyler Vaught was 11-of-18 for 144-yards and two touchdowns. They had 338 yards of total offense. Haffner was 11-of-21 for 208 yards and three interceptions. The Patriots had 301 yards of total offense.

Oakland's season ends at 12-and-2. Maryville will play Ravenwood next Saturday in Cookeville for the Class 6A title. It's the Rebels' 10th consecutive trip to the state title game. Ravenwood, by the way is led by Will Hester, the former head coach at La Vergne.
