No one died in a traffic crash during the Memorial Day holiday in Rutherford County after teams of law enforcement officers conducted preventive sobriety and seat belt checkpoints, the Tennessee Highway Patrol reported.

THP troopers were joined by Murfreesboro and Smyrna Police and Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office in conducting the two sobriety and one seat belt checkpoints, said THP Lt. Monty J. Terry, who is assigned to Rutherford County.

“We had a lot of support from the Sheriff’s Office,” Lt. Terry said.

In a letter to Sheriff Robert Arnold, Lt. Terry said additional resources were instrumental in the success of the checkpoints and keeping motorists safe during the holiday weekend.

“There is no way to accurately measure the crashes that was circumvented or the lives that were possibly saved over the holiday weekend,” Lt. Terry said.

Results of the checkpoints and saturation patrols included:
· 29 DUIs.
· 77 seat belt violations.
· Nine driving on suspended or revoked licenses charges.
· 59 speeding citation.

Lt. Terry expects THP will partner with local law enforcement agencies for traffic enforcement during the Independence Day holiday July 4.
