Mindful Care Adult Day Services will host "Mardi Gras in May," Saturday, May 30, to benefit the seven-year-old program that offers cognitive activities, social experiences and compassionate care for persons with mild Alzheimer's and other memory-related challenges.

Open and free to the community, the party will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Oaklands Historic House Museum, 900 North Maney Avenue in Murfreesboro. Masks and beads will be provided for everyone, and hors d'oeuvres and beverages will be served. There will also be a silent auction, and vocal and instrumental music will be provided by Mockingbird Musicians.

"We are thrilled to be able to hold our annual fund raiser at Oaklands in the Maney Hall Ballroom," said Tina O'Brien, founder and executive director of Mindful Care. "The numbers of people affected by Alzheimer's disease is growing fast with a case diagnosed every 67 seconds. We at Mindful Care hope to expand our program to meet the growing need for affordable community care for local families dealing with Alzheimer's."

O'Brien added that 100 percent of donated funds are earmarked for the program and are used to purchase such items as arts and crafts materials, memory games and exercises, puzzles, snacks, field trips, insurance and other program supplies. O'Brien and the organization's board of directors are volunteers.

"Donations as well as grants also support our fee-assistance program because we do not want to turn anyone away due to financial hardship," O'Brien noted. "We rely on generous members in our community to help us provide relief to family caregivers." Donations from individuals and businesses support nearly 50 percent of the entire program, she pointed out.

Donations will be accepted at the door, O'Brien said. If people prefer, they may go to www.mindful-care.org and donate online. Sponsorships are also available at various giving levels. For more information, call Mindful Care at 615-542-4371.

"We would love to see everyone in person on May 30," O'Brien said. "This is an opportunity for our staff, volunteers and board members to thank our friends and supporters of Mindful Care."

Benefits of this event are not designated for Oaklands Historic House.
