The driver of the motorcycle was 27-year old Patrick Borum from Murfreesboro. He received life threatening injures and was transported by RCEMS to the ER at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital, and then taken by LifeFlight helicopter to the Vanderbilt Trauma Center.

The driver of the car was not injured. He was 18-year old Benjamin Brooks of Christiana.

After a preliminary investigation, it appears that Brooks' white 2006 Nissan Sentra was traveling south on New Salem Highway. Borum, who was on a grey 2005 Kawasaki ZX-10R motorcycle, had just left the parking lot of a business at the intersection and was traveling north on New Salem Highway. Brooks attempted to make a left turn onto Warrior Dr. when it collided with the motorcycle in the intersection. The driver of motorcycle was ejected.

Just prior to this crash, an MPD officer, was dispatched to the area for a report of a motorcyclist driving recklessly. The officer found the alleged reckless driver, Mr. Borum, parked in the parking lot of the Speedway Market and warned him about driving recklessly. Mr. Borum denied being the reported reckless vehicle. Within two minutes of the officer's departure from the scene, the crash at this intersection was reported to police communications.
