An MTSU professor was the victim of tax fraud. Someone evidently used the professors' social security number to file a tax return.
A police report shows that the victim found out about the fraud through a letter that she received from the IRS on Tuesday. Evidently, the professor did not file the tax return that was referenced in the letter.
There are no known suspects in the case and the incident adds to the long list of tax return fraud in the United States. CNBC reported that tax refund fraud will likely reach $21 billion dollars for the 2015 year.
Between 2011 and 2014, the IRS stopped 19 million suspicious tax returns protecting over $63 billion in fraudulent refunds.
