With over 9.11 million people currently enrolled within the healthcare system and the Gulf War Era population statistically increasing, the VA is aggressively assessing current and future facility needs nationwide. The large and diverse patient population is only second in line to the United States Military. The stakes are high. The cost of construction, maintaining buildings, initiating lean processes and design, affordable care, staff recruitment, retention and patient safety are just a few areas the VA is taking very seriously. Hear firsthand how the Interior Design profession is impacting goals and initiatives set forth by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Teresa Tillman has worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs overseeing Interior Design Initiatives at the Tuscaloosa Medical Center for over ten years. During her tenure, she helped support a major cultural transformation through a campus-wide Interior Design initiative which includes hospice care, a woman's veteran's unit, skilled nursing and "The Cottages" Community Living Center. Recently, she joined the Birmingham Medical Center to establish similar initiatives. Teresa is a true champion who continually strives for well planned, supportive patient-centered care environments. She brings a unique perspective as the owner's representative, a liaison between design professionals and contractors while always looking out for the best interests of the Veteran patient population being served.

AnnMarie Jackson has over 25 years of commercial design experience primarily focusing on healthcare environments since 1995. Her passion for design, sharing knowledge and expertise drives her to help clients and project teams create better and safer healthcare environments. She was an integral part of the VA Tuscaloosa "The Cottages" design team and also worked on a mix-reuse facility at Ft. McPherson Georgia for homeless Veterans. AnnMarie is a member of the Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers and is an advocate for evidence based design practices and strategies. "EBD" substantiates the importance and impact the built environment has on the human experience. By basing design decisions on research findings, Interior Designers can directly impact people's lives. Recently, AnnMarie served on the American Society of Interior Designers national board of directors. ASID is the oldest, largest and leading professional organization for interior designers with over 24,000 members.
